Now I look at trees and sky etc with a kind of dispassionate acknowledgment of them, aware of their beauty but not in awe of it like I once was. I wonder if that's the natural progression as our practice moves forward, or if I went wrong somewhere.

I think that's natural. Some healthy detachment. Better to have inner silence than too much energy. Sounds like you are self-pacing well.
