I've been doing the I AM meditation for some time now. Even though I am getting results, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that I can get into a fairly deep state, much, much quicker using breath awareness.
I don't want to go over the old ground now covered in the difference between breath awareness and mantra because I've already asked that question and had excellent advice from the group.
One of my problems is time limits. As it is now, I need to get out of bed at 5am latest if I have a chance to get in my 30min med practice. So, what I've been doing is this. I do maybe 5mins of breath awareness to get me to a quiet place (to get to this level with the mantra would take the whole session), I sit in this quiet place and forget about the breath, I just sit and very nice it is. After a while, I then start the I am mantra very slowly. It is easy and natural. I then continue to the end of the session sinking deeper and deeper.
It works for me that's all I can say, especially if there are noise distractions. So to put it in a nutshell, 5min breath awareness, 5min of silence then the last 20min mantra.
Can anyone see any problem with this approach?

I think I might of answered my own question by trawling through old threads. The problem is some folks say its OK to mix, others say to avoid.
Maybe I should just crack on with it and see what happens. If my head implodes, you folks will be the first to know.

I would say swap the last two; 5 mins of breath awareness, 20 mins mantra and 5 mins silence. But let it be noted that this is not AYP.
And note that "going deep into silence" is not the goal in AYP. |
