I'm able to abide in pure consciousness fairly easily in DM. The "I AM" has become pretty potent, one "I AM" and it feels like I'm good for a few minutes. It almost seems counter-intuitive to force the mantra when I am already abiding as the goal. Or at least I think that is the goal.

Hi wakeupneo:
The goal during deep meditation is not to "abide in pure consciousness." It is to stay with the procedure of deep meditation, which means easing back to the mantra whenever we realize we are off it into something else, which includes the thought, "Oh, I am abiding in pure consciousness now, and don't need to return to the mantra."
Returning to the mantra is never about forcing. It is about favoring the mantra at whatever level we find ourselves in the mind -- clear or faint and fuzzy. In this way the mantra serves as a vehicle going inward, no matter where we come back into the thought process, and no matter what sort of concept or analysis is vying for our attention. As soon as we give in to the temptation to evaluate what is happening during deep meditation and altering the procedure to suit that, then the effectiveness of our meditation will be less. That is why it is always about the procedure, and never about evaluating experiences occurring during meditation.
We are not after a particular experience in meditation. We are after the results in daily activity. The only way we will have them is by staying with the procedure when we are sitting.
The frequency of mantra repetition will vary widely according to the process of purification occurring within. Some sessions we will pick up the mantra once and be gone for the whole 20 minutes. Other times, we may be coming back to the mantra many times during the session. It will be whatever it needs to be for the purification we are undergoing at the time. It is not something we can regulate. It is regulated by the natural process of purification and opening occurring within us, which the procedure of deep meditation facilitates.
The guru is in you.
