Hi Everyone/ Yogani
I find it easier to trace my spinal column in SBP if I use Ujjayi for both in and out breaths. Is this OK ?
Also, some schools (Yogananda), advise tracing from Mooladhara to visuddha to Bindu, unlike to Visuddha and Ajna chakras as in AYP. The out-breath tracing is from Bindu to the Medulla to Visuddha and down to Mooladhara.Since the tracing is almost in a straight line, this(PY's)method seems easier. What is the logic of The AYP method? Could Yogani pl. explain.

Hi Krish:

Some teachings use ujjayi (restricting air flow with the epiglottis) going both ways, but AYP does not. Over the long term, the negative pressure that ujjayi can cause in the lungs during inhalation may not be healthful. Neither are the effects of long term external kumbhaka (breath suspension).

But that is not the only reason why we do not use ujjayi on inhalation with spinal breathing in AYP. Opening the deep throat wider than usual during inhalation has an effect on the medulla oblongata (brain stem) that supports the effects of spinal breathing. Then we use ujjayi on exhalation for its positive effects there.

Using ujjayi just because it helps you track the spinal nerve upward for now may be a false economy, since there are other factors in play that have nothing to do with the energetic scenery we may be experiencing at the moment. This is why we say, "Favor the practice over the experience." The scenery will always be changing, but the underlying principles of practice will remain the same.

It is the same with looking at different modes of spinal breathing, which there are many. An easier tracing of the spinal nerve short term with a more intricate method, may not be easier long term. In fact, over the long term there will be a trend toward less definition of the inner neurobiology, not more. AYP spinal breathing starts with less. Less is more...

If you are getting stuck in-between root and brow, it is fine to skip over the stuck place, being sure to be at the brow at the end of inhalation and at the root at the end of exhalation. This skipping over to the two end points (brow and root) will clear the path in-between, and any stuck place will dissolve in time. If the whole thing becomes too rigid and overwhelming, then stop and let the attention rest easily with whatever sensation is there in the body for a few minutes. This will generally dissolve the obstruction enough to easily continue spinal breathing. Over time, spinal breathing will become much easier, because the inner obstructions become much less with practice. That is the purpose of spinal breathing, and all of yoga.

As for comparing AYP spinal breathing to Kriya Yoga spinal breathing or other methods, it is preferred not to be doing that in this forum category, which is for AYP spinal breathing support, not for analyzing everything else that is out there. Those comparisons are welcome to be done in the "other systems" forum category. There is a recent topic on spinal breathing in there where this was done. It was moved out of here. We'd like to keep support for the core AYP practices as clear as possible in the AYP Deep Meditation and Pranayama forum categories.

In any case, that is the AYP point of view on ujjayi and spinal breathing practice. You are, of course, free to follow whatever path you choose. Better not to try and follow too many methods at once though. Pick your practice and favor it over the long term. That is where the real benefits are. Not in trying to accommodate every energy wrinkle that comes up. Much better to favor the practice than be constantly redesigning it...

The guru is in you.

Thanks, Yogani, for your comments. Also, the point re: the appropriate forum to post in, is taken. Actually, I was aware of it, but there was an oversight on my part. I apologise for it.
