From time to time I pop on my headphones and listen to a yoga nidra MP3 I have. I really enjoy this practice.
However, of late, I seem to be falling alseep or maybe entering into an altered state or some deep state of relaxation, not sure which it is. But I totally lose my awareness that's for sure. For the first 5-10 minutes I will be surveying my body with my awareness, moving my attention to different body parts as the swami instructs, then all of the sudden it's 20 minutes later and I realize that I haven't been following the guided meditation at all.
1. Does this ever happen to you? 2. Do you still get the benfit of the yoga nidra when this happens?

Sometimes the deep sleep is more than just sleep.
Yogani talks about it here: quote: http://www.aypsite.org/17.html No sensory experience, no mantra, no thoughts, but still conscious inside – were you asleep? Probably not. Meditation sometimes produces a sleep-like state, like you described, but the physiological parameters are different. The metabolism goes much lower than in sleep. Heart rate and breathing are much slower than in sleep, nearly stopped. The body and mind come to a state of complete silence, while still awake inside. The level of rest in the body and mind in meditation is deeper than sleep. It is a different kind of rest that removes impurities; obstructions to consciousness that sleep cannot reach. However, meditation is not a replacement for sleep, which has its own dynamics in the daily rejuvenation cycle.
You could read up Yogani's lesson on Yoga Nidra. Lesson 299 – Cosmic Samyama – Advanced Yoga Nidra

Thanks again Shanti...you always seem to know just the right lesson to refer me to. You know, I keep getting referred to lessons that I have not yet made it to, maybe a sign that I need to advance my practice a tad?
Nonetheless, things are going well and I appreciate your insights. Thank you. |

You are welcome Solo. Glad I can help.
Not sure if this is talked about anywhere in Yogani's lessons.. but it is OK to read ahead. Adding new practices (which would be the ones mentioned in the left hand side panel) will not be done till you feel you are ready for them.. however many of the lessons are just question/answers and do answer many of the questions people ask here. So it will help to keep on reading, just don't add any new practices till you are ready for them. Yogani, please do correct me if I am wrong. |

Hi Shanti:
Good advice. And you just reminded me to add yoga nidra (cosmic samyama) to the key lessons in the left border. Thanks!

Yogani, would you say, the order in which the practices show up on the left border is the order in which they should be added to our sitting practice? (Except, as you mention in Lesson 269 we can leapfrog to samyama.) |

Hi Shanti:
Not necessarily. The key lessons in the left border are more or less in order, but there are some variations there for presentation purposes. Better to follow the lessons, with suggestions on the sequence of taking on practices as discussed there. Later on, in upcoming lessons, we will get more into sequencing, variations, and other nuances.
Of course, it is always the practitioner's call.
The guru is in you.
