Hello Fellow AYPers,
I?ve been practicing spinal breathing and deep meditation for roughly a year now. Luckily, I just recently stumbled onto the practice of Solar Centering brought forth by Yogani. Who I give much of many thanks!! All in all, I love this practice and it adds so much to my DM sessions. I noticed the difference from the 1st go and now I look forward to engaging in sessions.
I was reading into the solar plexus chakra (manipura) and the effects and benefits of balancing this energy center. The benefits of balancing are: increased self esteem, higher level confidence, fortified will power and persistence in the face of challenge, stronger sense of feeling grounded to name a few..Of course, there are several outside practices and hand mudras suggested for doing so?but id prefer to stay with the AYP means of purification and opening..
That being said, will solar centering using the AYAM mantra during deep mediation lead to the balancing and energizing of the solar plexus chakra (manipura)? Has anyone seen any specific benefits and translations in daily living? |

Hi Reno,
Yes, the Solar Centering enhancement can lead to the increased purification of the solar plexus chakra and also the heart chakra, as this is also close by. Prana follows the attention, so bringing the attention to this area of the body during meditation will tend to increase both prana and purification in that region. This is usually a good thing, increasing compassion and love (heart chakra), and emotional strength and sensitivity (manipura chakra), but can sometimes prove to cause too much purification in this region for some practitioners.
Yogani puts it like this in lesson 368:
"With this additional aspect of meditation procedure, we may notice... An initial increase in sensitivity in the heart and solar plexus region. This is purification and opening, and can manifest as emotion, vibration or the sensation of heat in this area. If any of these symptoms become excessive, we should first follow the procedure in Lesson 15 for handling strong sensations during deep meditation. If this does not dissolve excessive symptoms of purification, then we should self-pace the use of the solar centering enhancement, as needed. It does not mean we have to reduce overall meditation time if self-pacing the use of solar centering is sufficient to restore balance." [Yogani]

Reno this is the reason solar centering is a major part of my current practices. In walking, attention on the center is also on the diaphragm and the breath, grounding me in the body instead of lost in random thoughts. Attention at the center in studio (asana class) helps in balance and flowing between poses, as well as matching breathing to movement. In DM it is home to the mantra, and balances energy evenly along the shushumna (root, center, third eye) rather than excess in the head. I am experimenting with the concept of ishta, of devotion to an ideal. I have resonated with Shiva after becoming hypnotized by one particular rendering of him. When I fall into samadhi, tethered to AYAM at the solar center, I render that image upon my heart and yearn for him to swallow me whole.

Hi Christi & Dogbog,
I am returning from traveling - this is the reason for the delay.
Thank you both for your responses! I appreciate the time taken to share your insight. After continuing practices for the last week or so, I've noticed the heart space and solar plexus almost "melting" together in a sense. It's like space expanding between the two. There's also a radiation of pleasure - it feels like strong EC right in the solar plexus and sometimes heart area.
I will adhere to self pacing if needed but I am pleased with the results thus far.
Do you have any experience with using different hand mudras during practice? Or is it best to keep it simple and stick with the gyan and chin mudras within AYP practices? |
