Some regurgitate this trite platitude: “There are no atheists in a foxhole.”
It’s true. They never make it to one. They have craftier places to hide. Behind booming artillery. Behind ringing podium. Behind smiling mask.
Maybe they cannot hide. In that case, they die.
Do you know of an atheist who prays late into the night? He prays for death with all his tears.
Whatever gentle soul cried out that winter got his wish. Something fierce now lives here.
Will he live for his ferocity or something else?

Strong.
Never been in a military foxhole, but I've definitely been in a mental one. Then I decided to climb out and face the risk of mental-identity death, because...why not? I like adventure.
