I have been practicing for a few months now and I recently spoke to a meditation teacher about my practice. So far whenever thoughts emerge I don't try to push them out of my mind but rather I simply dont pay them any attention and try to focus on the mantra instead. However this teacher told me that this is wrong practice and that it is important for me to notice the present thought as an object of consciousness before moving back to the mantra. I was just wondering what are peoples opinions on this?
Your teacher is probably practicing a different type of meditation.
For AYP Deep Meditation we let thoughts run alongside the mantra if they arise. We don't pay attention to them. If we find that we are then we will be off the mantra - so we just easily go back to the mantra.
