First used consciously as a tool by the mind. Sometimes relational, sometimes not.

At some point inquiry becomes all relational.

If done frequently enough an automatic habit of inquiry is established, thoughts are automatically met with inquiry.

Sometimes inquiry can become a habit which can perpetuate separation if used to "fix" or "improve" the state of the mind.

Surrender recognized as the only viable way for the mind to meet all the objects of perception.

Eventually, the dissolving of inquiry, what arises dissolves as it is witnessed.

Then the dissolving of the witness into What Is.
