There is always the discussion that comes up: is there free will, or is there not?
The conclusion we see the most among spritual seekers, is that there is not; that in fact all 'our' efforts are in fact part of the divine plan. There is nothing we can actually do; everything happens as it is supposed to happen. I am not disupting the general truth of this, but there is more to it than is immediately obvious.
Let's take the example of a collection of exact equals. Lets say ten people of exactly the same potential and expression of that potential, with equal resources, in the same 100x100x100 room. None of the people "team up" or "gang up" on others, all act as a pure expression of individual free will. What do you get? You get the lack of all possible free will. Equals cancel out; and the result is a group consensus.
This is the situation we are in, as sparks of the divine. All sparks are equal. All in fact, have free will. The physical world, is in fact, (as seen with different eyes), the common result of the free will of all the equal sparks.
We have infinite free will. We have no free will. Our collective free will creates the environment that is the limitation we collectively seek to exceed. This is why none of us will truly be free, until all of us are truly free.
Quantum Mechanics, the seemingly "magical" theory of modern physics, is a good metaphor for this phenomenon.
Now, ultimately, is free will impossible, that in fact the One is the true source, that all this free will is in fact illusion/delusion? Yes. That is also true. The One desires that all the sparks of Him/Her have this interesting mix of free will and group karma. He/She does not care if it takes us a trillion years to dig our way out of this group karma we have created. Time means little anyway.
The only possible way, is the grace which flows from the One; the end result will be the result set in stone by the One. But how we collectively solve the riddle and come home is up to us. This gives the One joy, to have children, who of their own free will come home.
Now in these few paragraphs, it was the free will of the Atman that was being discussed, but the individual Atman powering us, also allows the "little selves" free will as well. For example, one of the most critical concepts in all of yoga, is that whatever we--the limited self does not release for transformation--won't be transformed. This is why you can have a spiritual giant say (whoever you view in that category), who still likes to abuse animals or something of that nature. Quite simply--that tendency was not released for transormation by the Higher Self, so it was not transformed. This explains why we are all such uneven works in progress.
I love you all so much,
