Hi,
My question is related to deep meditation. I have been following the spinal breathing Pranayama with deep meditation repeating the mantra suggested by Yogani. I started with “Iam” and after meditating for several weeks I enjoy some advancement. The thought process –the random thought volume decreased and, now I only from time to time get of track where I can keep my attention on the mantra for as long as the meditation session lasts. The thing is that recently I have hear a hissing sound in my head, which is like a very thin vibration and when I meditated, I am tempted to leave the mantra and just go by with that vibration which has the tendency to get stronger and grow and spread first in the head then in the body slowly but steadily. Now, I do not know if I should follow the instructions as given from Yogani and keep the mantra repeating it steadily , or I should follow the vibration and focus on it instead…? Thanks for the feedback

Hi,
I cannot say what is it that's going on. (Looks like something's opening.) As I gathered from the lesson, when we have experience in meditation, we should gently favor the mantra. Unless it's something discomforting, then we gently pay attention to it for a few minutes and then back to the mantra. That's as far as I know. Folks, please correct me if I'm wrong. Good luck!

Hello and welcome to the forums, both of you
The idea is to always favor the mantra. If we realize we've gotten off the mantra, we gently return to it. If something is so distracting or uncomfortable that we can't continue to meditate, we stop meditating until it passes. However, that doesn't mean we follow or focus on the distraction. We just wait for it to pass.

When in doubt, follow the instructions
In the case of the hissing and vibrations, we regard it as "scenery" and ignore it during sitting practices. Just return to the mantra, unless as mentioned above, there is discomfort.
Hope this helps!

Agree with cosmic and Philaboston.
Keep favoring the mantra, it really is just as simple as it seems in the lessons.
I experienced a similar high pitched sound when I began meditation and it is normal and OK. It was the first of many energy experiences to follow. Even if you are tempted to pay it some attention, that is ok. Just "gently favor" the mantra. There is great wisdom in that instruction to gently favor. |
