Hi everyone,

One of the many poets I admire is Kabir, I do find his writings very touching , I wanted to share some of his dohas (dohas are in Hindi, so I have accompanied translation along):

1. Jyon Naino Mein Putli, Tyon Maalik Ghat Mahin
Moorakh Log Na Janhin, Baahar Dhudhan Jahin

Translation:
Like the pupil in the eyes
The Lord resides inside
Ignorant do not know this fact
They search Him outside

2. Pothi Padh Padh Kar Jag Mua, Pandit Bhayo Na Koye
Dhai Aakhar Prem Ke, Jo Padhe so Pandit Hoye

Translation
Reading books everyone died, none became any wise
One who reads the word of Love, only becomes wise

3. Maala To Kar Mein Phire, Jeebh Phire Mukh Mahin
Manua To Chahun Dish Phire, Yeh To Simran Nahin

Translation
The rosary rotating by the hand (or) the tongue twisting in the mouth,
With the mind wandering everywhere, this isn't meditation (Oh uncouth!).

4. Akath Kahani Prem Ki, Kutch Kahi Na Jaye
Goonge Keri Sarkara, Baithe Muskae

Translation:
Inexpressible is the story of Love
It cannot be revealed by words
Like the dumb eating sweet-meat
Only smiles, the sweetness he cannot tell

Here is a poem by Kabir that has always fascinated me. I have posted it earlier also:

LOVE'S NOT GROWN IN GARDENS
LOVE'S NOT SOLD AT MARKET

HE WHO WANTS IT, KING OR COMMONER
GIVES HIS HEAD AND TAKES IT

STUDYING GREAT BOOKS MANY HAVE DIED
NONE EVER BECOME LEARNED

TWO LETTERS AND A HALF IN LOVE
WHO STUDIES THEM IS LEARNING

NARROW IS THE LANE OF LOVE
TWO WILL NEVER FIT

WHEN I WAS, THE LORD WAS NOT
NOW HE IS... I AM NOT
- Kabir

And a similar one from Anthony De Mello posted here by emc:

"What is love?"
"The total absence of fear," said the Master.
"What is it we fear?"
"Love," said the Master.
- Anthony De Mello

Love is a state when you are not. It is Enlightenment.

What we normally call Love is a learned thing... from people, books, movies, environment, past experiences etc... it is not real. Just as we ourselves have become unreal.

This so call learned states of Fear, Love, Hate, Jealousy etc exist as long as you exist.

But what is really Love and what is this thing called 'Fear from Love'?

The above poem by Kabir, quote by Anthony and below lines by Osho clarify:

"And whenever His hand comes close to you, you become frightened. And I understand, the fear is natural. What is the fear? The fear is: if God is, then you cannot be."

So unless one is Enlightened, it can not be understood what exactly Love is. It is... but not an experience, not a feeling. Because there remains no one to have the experience or a feeling.

Love is God.

I remember this doha specially I read it so many times when I was in India.

I miss India, the 'Purvai' the air that comes before just it starts to rain, along with many other things.

I think the song says it all..

Thandi thandi purwaayi mein meethi meethi khushboo
Mat poocho us khushboo mein hota hai kaisa jadoo
Jadoo aisa hota hai ke har koi jhoomta rehta hai
Jis desh mein Ganga rehta hai

Where in India are you from?

Very true nandhi, Kabir was born supposedly to a brahman family and they threw him away and he was brought up by a childless couple and turned out to be great saint, no-one even knows if Kabir's real parents ever came to know that their son turned out of be a famous Saint and one of greatest poet of the world, I find it all very tragic.

Is your name inspired by the nandhi bull, vehicle of Shiva?

divine arzkiyahai,

thank you!

yes, kabir's teachings are so apt in this world to be within and beyond and confined to the common sense of oneness. thank you for this post.

regarding nandhi, the name- at the onset of the spiritual journey after the death experience, realized an ancient master guiding this intellect. this ancient master was worshiped as aadigurunatha and his other name was nandhi. so assuming this sacred honor to be form each day unfolds the identity to be.

however, nandhi the bull, as a symbol- holds the significance of the mind that is directed towards source at all times.

aum
