Dear friends

For those who don't know of him, Grand Master Eihei Dogen was the founder of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism, practice within which is founded on the mind of non-duality in every moment.

Dogen's Shobogenzo is a non-dual masterpiece, and though written in the 13th century is accessible and, I have found as a non-Buddhist advaitin, helpful for practice.

Try HHubert Nearman translation available on the web for free from Shasta Abbey; avoid Nishijima's translation unless for academic research, it is very literal from the Japanese and bogged down in notes and references.

In the context of recommending seated meditation as the key practice, the sublime Master says:

"Now then, to think that practice and realization are separate from each other is a non-Buddhist view, or misunderstanding of the Way. In Buddhism, practice and realisation are completely one and the same. Because it is a practice based on being spiritually awake at this very moment, the diligent training which springs forth from our initial resolve to seek the Way is, in itself, the whole of one's innate certainty. For this reason, we teach that you should not hold in mind any expectation of being enlightened as something outside of, or apart from, practice, since this practice directly points you towards your own original, innate, certainty...............If you let go of any thought of 'I am doing a marvellous practice,' your innate enlightenment will fill your hands to overflowing. If you purge yourself of any thought of 'being enlightened', this wondrous practice will operate throughout your whole being."

Wonderful, compassionate, liberating words. Beginner's practice is as exalted as the adept's. The true adept knows this. No-difference. Not-two. Anywhere. Anytime. Any place. Boundariless clarity, ever-existent.

Peace
