I have watched many documentaries about the spiritual path over the last 30 years or so, and I must say that the one that really resonates with me the most is the extraordinary film Amongst White Clouds. It deals with a western aspirants search for a master among the Buddhist hermits living in the Zhongnan mountains of China. The teachings imparted by the hermits is truly inspiring. I watch this whenever I feel my practice needs a boost - http://www.amongstclouds.com
I saw this movie as well. My honest opinion was that I was shocked to see (from my limited perspective) the lack of any real state from many of these recluse practioners, which exception to the last one they interview, he very much seemed divine.
It seems for many of these practioners the path becomes a way of life and at some point they lose themselves in practice and never really question nor have a stron desire for truth.
