I found spinal breathing very pleasant to perform, but I have difficulty combining it with ujjayi - I think because of some anxiety concerning throat constriction.

Is spinal breathing without ujjayi beneficial enough to continue doing it, or is it a waste of time?

Hi Tosh, and welcome!

Ujjayi is an enhancement to spinal breathing, not a requirement. The style of ujjayi we do in AYP is a gentle restriction of the epiglottis on exhalation only, producing a slight hiss. During inhalation we go for a more open and relaxed throat than usual. Each has its own reason and effect.

Other enhancements from the Spinal Breathing Pranayama book include full yogic breathing, a gentle lifting of the eyes, and noticing cool and warm currents in the ascending and descending breath in the spinal nerve.

All of these are helpful but not essential enhancements. They will happen if and when our purifying nervous system calls for them. Spinal breathing works just fine on whatever level we happen to be practicing it. Not to worry.

Remember, all of our practices will have a "clunky stage" in the beginning, and become increasingly refined over time of daily practice.

The guru is in you.

Thanks, Yogani, for the quick reply!
I have started with the program in your complete "Advanced Yoga practices" book and currently enjoy very much the practice of deep meditation and some minutes of spinal breathing at the begin of each session.
