Offline Send Email The furrowing of the brow at third eye in sambhavi is supposed to be an extremely subtle, almost purely energetic/intentional action. And, indeed, that's what it's been for me. Until now. Lately, in meditation, it's as if more and more energy is moving through my third eye. And I find that I'm really scrunching up my forehead when this happens (totally involuntarily).
I'm guessing it's a sign of impurities being worked out, so I'm not worried about it. But my forehead aches after meditation from the muscle strain. Anyone else getting this?
Another interesting thing I'm finding is that even though my physical eyes are pointed way, way, way up and in in sambhavi, my energetic eyes are totally relaxed and can freely move in any direction. E.g., I can feel that I'm looking downward even though my eyes are tightly pulled upward into sambhavi. In fact, I could almost swear that my eyes are moving around normally, though they're not.
Also, I notice that I have a fairly wide and severe crack going down the front of my forehead and through the third eye. Uh...was that there before? Anyone know their skull anatomy? I know that kundalini awakening shifts bones around in the head, but this is kind of creepy. 810 From: "azaz932001" <richardchamberlin14@hotmail.com> Date: Sat Apr 23, 2005 7:09am Subject: Re: Scrunching up Forehead and other Sambhavi Observations azaz932001 Offline Send Email --- In AYPforum@yahoogroups.com, "jim_and_his_karma" > Another interesting thing I'm finding is that even though my physical eyes are pointed > way, way, way up and in in sambhavi, my energetic eyes are totally relaxed and can freely > move in any direction. Hi Jim I get the same thing with my eyes they go into sambhavi automatically when I start to meditate and stay there as long as I don't find myself thinking about it. Yes and the energetic eyes do apear to be able to move. The same thing is hapening during spinal breathing and the inner eyes appear to be able to follow the spinal nerve.
The crack thing sounds a bit scary

I did have a think kind of like that.Where it felt like my head was fuzzy around my teeth and nose. I did this weird stretch thing like pulling your ears back (you know how when people try and move their ears). My face cracked - no joke. I mean the bones. Very physically.
It was like a positioning of the face.
Wish I could explain better LOL.but yeah, I think it has happened to many people.
Warmest regards,
Paula

My doctor and friends laugh at me when I mention some things, but I feel that I may be taken seriously here.
I too have experienced the crinkling in the forehead, but for me they are spontaneous muscle spasms that almost feel like a wink. It's as if my third eye is winking at me!! This does not necessarily happen during meditational periods, but I have noticed it happening when I am so focused that I have lost myself, in a sense.
Also, I have been quite certain for over a year now that my skull has changed. This has been a somewhat major issue. To present my story in a nutshell, I experienced a serious opening of my Sahasrara chakra January before last. I was experiencing the most painful headaches during this visionary period, and spent months after learning to ease the pain through breathing and visualization exercises. I think my kundalini energy was blocked - I told my doctor everything, and even got a CT scan, but physically I was/am in perfect health. The visualization/breathing exercises were working at easing the pain, so I kept doing them. I rarely get those headaches now.
But my skull! Soon after this happened, I felt as if the bones in my head were shifting, I truly feel a large crack-dent down the middle of my skull now that I am quite sure was not there before. My doctor said that this is impossible, and perhaps it is just my imagination, but it certainly feels as though parts of me are physically changing.
Apparently physical change is part of any 'awakening' process, I just wish there was more empirical data to compare our experiences with; it would also make me feel better to know that this is normal.
Thanks for letting me share - and thank you for sharing,
Athena

Offline Send Email Welcome, Athena. not to freak you out or anything, just because there are people here who report similar experiences to yours doesn't mean that you're NOT getting flaky! ;)
I don't say this to be cruel, and none of this is related to you, personally, or anything in your fine, level-headed posting. But it's important to be aware of the resonance effect of groupthink in a forum like this. We all live in the real world. We've not chosen to be renunciates in caves. Our practices are important, but moving with ease in the world is top priority. So, come here for light validation and helpful information and community, but remember that the real world, for our present purposes, lies out THERE.
But, believe me, I understand. I can't talk about any of this stuff with my friends/family! But I see the importance of not becoming withdrawn or alienated, or having my ego inflate with some notion of secret superiority. We're cleaning crud off our windsheilds with these practices, that's all. So I keep reminding myself of that. Indians are such wonderful and imaginative writers. They've depicted this path with lovely metaphors, which were beautifully effective in agrarian societies of millennia long past. But those metaphors can play into western materialism (all of us climbing our various ladders) in an unfortunate way (I recommend Chogyam Trungpa's "Cutting through Spiritual Materialism" for more info). So I don't cling to metaphors of chariot races or ascensions to heavenly realms. My modern, urban mind dovetails best with thinking of these practices as akin to cleaning my windshield or brushing my teeth. And i love AYP for being so mild- mannered yet deeply heartfelt (a hard combination to find!).
Yeah, the pleasant little muscle spasms. I don't sweat them unless they seem to be assymetrical - left or right side of the brow center. If that's the case, I'm careful in spinal breathing to keep a nice left/right symmetry as I ascend/descend. I also recheck my sitting posture to be sure I'm straight. if 3rd eye remains assymetrical, I do asana practice (concentrating on twists....they're best for left/right assymetries). If it's not a left/right thing, I just figure the "radio" is crackling a little with those spasms...just electricity stuff. It's impurities being worked out; it'll get smoother (like everything else).
My understanding is that headache is a fairly common symptom even of non-disastrous openings. What you're describing goes a bit beyond, though. Glad you're doing better!! I'm currently working on a really extended article I'll call The Kundalini Survival Kit, for people with relatively light, non-crazy symptoms. sounds like you're back on track, but if you're still suffering, shoot me an email and I'll send you an early draft (I'd really prefer not to release it till it's done, but....).
You're very right about lack of empirical data. This is adventure travel. It's not a junket to Cancun where all exigencies have been anticipated and smoothed out. You've got to be self-reliant and resourceful to walk this path. Yogani does an admirable job of encouraging practitioners to cultivate these qualities.

Hi Jim,
I don't think that that crack is a crack in a literal sense. I don't think Kundalini shifts the bones, but there may be a subjective, energetic experience of a crack. These energetic things may (this is a speculation of mine purely now) have something to do with the muscles around the scalp.
If you experience energetic imbalances in the scalp muscles, try Bugs Bunny Kriya, which consists of moving one ear at a time. Eventually it can be worked into a 'twirl' of the scalp muscles, kind of like nauli Kriya is for lower down. See Yogani's instructions on Nauli Kriya.
I'm not entirely joking --- yoga was born of experimentation, although 99.9% of the results have to be thrown away for being useless! :)

I don't probe my face all that often :)
And my reading of the literature is that most authorities agree that kundalini energy does move around bones in the skull when it gets up there. in fact, that's responsible for a lot of the reports of "headaches". It's not so weird...puberty also brings about lots of physiological changes in bones and other fundamental structures.
Sorry I'm too swamped right now to come up with links on this, but a bit of googling will yield corroboration of this.

there may be some language difficulties here. I thought you are saying there is a crack in the bones of you skull. But it seems you are only talking about a furrow in your brow? (Or are you actually talking about a crack in your bones?) And I thought that Athena is corroberating this experience:
>> I truly feel a large crack-dent down the middle of my skull now that I am quite sure was not there before.
I'd be interested in seeing properly measured changes in the bone structure of the head. What I can say is that I have had a lot of energetic experiences that were 'like' experience of the bones moving around in my head. If I were in a community going through the same thing, we might all be writing about it, earnestly talking about the bones shifting around in our heads. This could be what is happening in the 'folklore' out there about kundalini. These sources could certainly be reliable and earnest, but mistaken about the detail.
The separate bones of the skull fuse together after infancy. One thing that could maybe happen is that the bones slowly grow into a different configuration.
I suppose, to keep it short, I'd be very slow to go from the energetic experience to the objective conclusions. Especially if the objective conclusions are, as you say, a little creepy. A lot of this creepiness could be coming from our thinking that they are objective when they might not be.
Best regards,
-David

Offline Send Email David, the brow furrowing and the crack are separate issues. Re: the latter, I seem to be scrunching up my forehead at the sheer force of the energy blasting through this point, and it's slightly uncomfortable, so I'm hoping it goes away, and was wondering if anyone had experience with this. My hope is to verify what I suspect: that eventually i'll be able to support that energy with my forehead relaxed. The tension disrupts my meditation a little.
As for the crack, again, David, the bone shifting thing is not my conclusion. Again, if you'll do some googling you'll see that much spiritual literature states that physical, not energetic, bone movement occurs with kundalini awakening. I'm not saying it's true, but it's a widely disseminated observation. I'm more interested in doing my practice than getting really involved with these side issues. But I can trace with my finger a fairly wide crack descending from the left part of my crown, past the left temple, zooming diagonally down the center of my forehead and between my brows. This is my real, physical finger and my real, physical head. Nothing conceptual or energetic. And this crack may have always been there. No idea. We all have cracks in our skulls - that I know, though my anatomy knowledge doesn't go much further than that.
