Hi Since the deeper and longer the breath is the more calm the mind gets,It should be possible to use deep belly breathing as an exellent and easy way to reduce thoughts and and enter meditaion states with.But I dont read or hear much about this method other than from some Zen sites.Have anybody else used Deep breathing as a meditation method? |

We use mantra meditation rather than breathing meditation because mantra meditation is more powerful. AYP recommends breathing meditation only for the most over-sensitive meditators.
Meditation techniques fall in two categories: 1. Effort-directed, such as Focused Attention - techniques of concentration and contemplation, and Open Awareness - such as Mindfulness; 2. Effortless techniques, that in time transcend the practice - such as mantra meditation/deep meditation.
While breathing meditation will take one to the meditation planes, there is the question of how to continue once the breathing stops. This is probably the reason the Zen practice requires the close guidance of a teacher. Breathing meditation is a slower path; thus, a Zen practitioner generally spends many hours practicing. In contract, deep meditation is a self-directed practice ("The guru is in you."), takes one all the way home, and requires only 20 minutes/twice a day practice, which is easier to accommodate in the modern busy schedule.
