Yogani's instruction, which is more explicit in the pranayama book than in the AYP lessons, to open and widen at the throat on pranayama inhale is really helpful. It not only ensures that we don't stay closed down from the ujaya exhale, but it also helps open throat chakra - which encourages a pulling-up of energy at the root.
The hatha yogis (and the Taoists) say kundalini pumps up from the sacrum (interestingly, the word derives from the same root as "sacred") AND pulls up from the throat. It's a double action of pulling from above and pushing from below.
I'd suggest a feeling of opening/widening both at the throat and at the sacrum on the inhalation in pranayama. |

Jim,
How do you open/widen the sacrum? Do you mean to apply mula bandha on the inhale? |

Sacrum is the lower portion of your back slope, a couple inches above your coccyx (aka "butt crack"). Another way to locate/visualize it is that it's at the same point as your pubic bone, only at yoru back body.
All you need is a dab of attention there. As with the throat, just think "wide and open" around about that area when you inhale. Don't think chakras; as Yogani says, chakras can just be "under the hood" stuff. |
