I have a kind of silly question: why do yogis sometimes put one hand up?
It's kind of like they're waving, but their palm is just facing forward with their fingers up straight. What is this all about?
I've seen statues of Shiva with this. Nandhi's guru did this in a picture. Dave's satguru Omdasji has a picture or two of him in this pose.
Does anyone have any idea? |

Its a mudra with a traditional meaning. From Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mudra
An example of a mudra done with the hands would be the outward-facing open palm known as Abhaya (without fear) mudrâ, a gesture meant to dispel the fear of the devotee. |

Did anyone do that as a child? I remember, as especially when I had a migraine, laying in bed and holding one arm above straight into the air. It was weird to observe myself doing that, since there was no understanding as to why.

That is an external link from wikipedia.
Shankh mudra is amazing. You can feel your own heart beat, intensely. It must be a resonance between the hand and the thumb, because the pulse sensation is profound. You can also feel something in the hands open up when you put your awareness into them. There are these subtle movements or pops, which is typical of kundalini flow.
The dharmachakra mudra is georgous. I intend to try that one.
Can anyone guess which mudra I think should be called the 'deniro' mudra? |

Hi Scott this is one of my many experiences,
Putting your hand up is not silly......this happens all the time to me......only now I notice whoever I am facing especially other shakti person raise their hand as well
It has to do with balancing energies....
But for me both hands usually make formations.......yeah just like in the pictures....
Now I feel electricity coming in from the left and exiting from the right......
I saw this occurred with a 3 year old except when I faced her she started laughing non stop........
actually for me I enjoy it I just watch my hands move very slowly each posture have a great meaning...I learnt a few so far
I hope this made you feel more comfortable
Namaste |

That is so interesting
this is something that happens quite frequently alot when i am asleep ill wake up to myself ticking my arm and carressing it in the air & noticed this happens all the time just sitting around next thing you know ive been sitting there with my arm str8 into the air
hubby noticed & always thought it was a little quirk
aum
also looking back at old modeling photos from before practice.. my hands have always went into odd little formations i see the mudras now but even photographers made jokes about it there she is with that weird hand thing again LOL!
