Dear Tom, Welcome to the forums. Yep. I have used them in the past as well, but as meditation settles in and becomes routine, light and noise are no longer a distraction to going inwards.
Yes I have used them with good results; the foam kind are best, that you compress with your fingers, and some block noise a lot better than others. I usually don't need them, but they are good for unusual circumstances, like if your neighbors are having a loud party.
