Bursting through the door,
He comes to take everything.
How to treat this thief?
To the Imaginary Thief:
Good morning! Welcome!
Would you like a cup of tea?
Take it. It's not mine.
Snarling Mother:
Mess with my children,
We will, both of us, find out
Where these lines are drawn.
The Thief:
Where is the trust that
I will treat you lovingly?
I don't have any.
The Thief:
Your children do not
Belong to you; I cannot
Steal what isn't yours.
Mother:
Allow a mother
Her instinct to shield her young.
You created it.
The Thief:
Allow me to be
Exactly what is needed
To be perfect love. |

I've had this recurring waking nightmare about a home invasion for years, but never realized what it was about. God is the thief. In the first poem, I'm describing an ordinary thief but, by the third poem, I've realized who this really is. From the standpoint of a five-year-old girl, God is the thief who took everything -- her home, her friends, her father, her innocence, her food, clothes, her sense of self-worth. Everything. And instead of feeling gratitude for the abundance bestowed now, there's only guilt that I have more than others and fear that one day it will all be taken again.
