Hi I am new here but I have been meditating using the I am method for about 9 months. When I meditate I have a noise in the ear that sounds like white noise(when the Tv has no channel). To help me focus, I embed the 'I Am' mantra in this ringing noise. Is this OK? Does anybody else do this? Thank you for your help |

Welcome to AYP Markus,
Do check out the medical reasons behind it and if thats normal then its fine even sometimes I do hear this ringing noise and I did the same thing as u did. Its also called NADA in sanscrit which means sound and its called Nada yoga in which a person tries to hear the sound(the ringing)in the ear. If it happens only during meditation and few minutes after then its fine otherwise checkout the clear of the medical possiblity as it can be TINNITUS.
Moreover I have read one hears the or one must hear the sound of AUM(the ringing) from the right ear(not from left) and I remember reading somewhere when one relaxes into meditation they hear this ringing/humming/voice especially during exit from physical body for astral travel.
Love n Light Viji
Note:But do check the medical possibility too. |

Hey Markus and welcome.
This is quite a common issue. Here are some more threads which discuss it:

There are more threads which cover it, but these are all of the ones which directly discuss it. If you do a forum search then the other additional threads will show up.
Also yes, ringing in the ears in the world of Ayurveda is called Karna Nada or: "Another similar condition is karnasveda(sound in ears). Here Vayu aggravated by exertion, wasting, intake of rough and astringent food and also after head-evacuation and excessive use of cold associating with Pitta, kapha and Rakta gets located in the passage of ear and thus produces sound of bamboo in the ears. The difference between karnanada and karnaksveda is that the former is caused by single vata with perception of various sounds while the latter is produced by vata associated with other dosha and with flute's sound."

I don't know exactly whether there is a specific difference between ear ringing as explained above (in the above Ayurdevda links) and ear ringing from meditation. If it only occurs for you during meditation then I guess that would be a key difference. I have ringing most of the time. Initially caused by listening to music that was too loud too much. It doesn't really bother me anymore. I sometimes wonder whether that ringing could have healed itself and been replaced by meditation related ringing.
As vijikr said you might want to get it checked out + if it only happens during meditation then it's definitely fine/nothing to worry about.

If it doesn't bother you then yes, definitely okay.
If it does bother you then on the whole grand scheme of things,
"Everything is perfect, so perfectly perfect" ~ The Upanishads
it's okay, but obviously it may not feel that way. Though if it is ongoing and bothering you I can say from experience that it won't always bother you. Many others with ringing report the same thing. Initial worry and then after a while it doesn't bother you anymore.
As I said, it's quite a common occurrence, meditation related ringing in the ears. It's fine. The general rule in AYP and I would say the majority of spiritual systems also (regarding experiences, any experiences happening during practices) don't worry about it/focus on it, when you notice it or notice yourself noticing it (and that goes for anything/any experience: divine light, ecstasy, etc) just easily return to your practice. Always favour the practice. To paraphrase Yogani, it is not experiences that help us progress, but practices.
I hope I haven't flooded you with too much info. I hope at least some of it helps.
