Hi everyone,
I really hate taking up your time with something so trivial, but I'd like some advice. O.K., we are all one. Everything on this planet is made up of the same thing. Well, pray tell what is the solution to annoying flies??? I am so tempted to swat them, but I´m not! Help!

If a hungry lioness, needing food for her cubs, killed you and drug you back to her babies, would she be committing a sin?
Only man makes things difficult.
Actions springing from a conditioned mind, cannot be right.
Do you have an answer?
I love you,

If you insist on not swatting them, try to change your perception so that you love having them there, and enjoy having them land on you. I'm not joking. |

why slap them? just use some repellent...citrus ...it works for flies AND mosquitos... once a lebanese devotee was with Swami Chidananda...there was a mosquito sucking Swamiji blood...the devotee wanted to kill the mosquito...Swamiji said: let the mosquito feed on that body. |

How about swatting a bigger fly... your mind.

Hi everyone, I love your answers! I had my mind made up for me. You know Yogani has said only two things could interrupt his meditation: someone who yells "fire!" and the other, "Your Mother in law is here!" Well, I have another one: pesky flies buzzing around my head and landing on my arms.(I really hate that)(this includes mosquitos too!)
I even put a piece of light plastic over my head(you would have cracked up if you had seen me, or send for the men in with white coats!
So, that didn´t work. I killed two of them and boy did it feel good! I guess I'm a murderer now!

This is hearsay and applies for outdoors - but if you fill a clear plastic bag with water, tie it and then just attach it around in the garden - say the fence or trees then it stops flies coming due to the way the plastic reflects the light... I have seen it used in outdoor restaurants in India.... |

Hi Nirmal! Can you get your hands on some Deep Woods OFF? Or some other form of bug repellent? Or you could get one of those great big hats with a wide brim and drape some tule or mosquito netting over it -- your own personal meditation tent. |

Hi guys,
Well, I've tried ignoring them,(using my mind!) and that only helps to a certain extent. Don't really want to walk around all day smelling like citrus and I live in Germany=no off. I don't think they have anything like that but I'll check it out. I do want to stay environmentally friendly though.
My only answer is to try to get along with them, but if they go extreme,Swat!
Also, my husband is rigging together screens for the windows!!! In Germany, there are no screens on windows. Haven't figured that one out yet.
Thanks for all of your help!

Mind itself is the biggest fly. It keeps moving from one object to another and buzzing all the time.
Do not use it... instead, swat it!
Learn to detach yourself from the mind and be yourself.
Then let alone flies... even if spiders, scorpions and snakes cover your body, you will love them instead of being annoyed.

Manigma,
Do you know how to detach yourself from the mind and just be yourself? I would love to know how to do this.

There is an incident in the life of Buddha from when he was still only a seeker. He was passing through a village with a companion. They were both talking when a fly sat on Buddha's neck. He was in the midst of discussion when he lifted his hand to drive the fly away. It flew away -- but Buddha stopped suddenly. "I have committed a serious error," Buddha told his companion. Then he lifted his hand again in the act of driving away the fly.
The fellow seeker exclaimed in surprise, "What is this you are doing? The fly is no longer there."
Buddha replied, "Now I am driving the fly away as I should have. Now I am fully aware of what I am doing. Now as the hand lifts, I am fully aware that it is being lifted and that it is going in the direction of my neck to drive the fly away. That time I was talking to you; hence my action was mechanical."
If we begin to do all our physical acts with full awareness, if you lift your hand upward with full attention you will feel yourself apart from the hand -- because the one who lifts is different from that which is lifted.
In Search of the Miraculous vol.2 http://www.oshoworld.com/e-books/se...search_title
So next time you meet a fly, just be fully aware of its presence. Observe it, observe yourself, observe the rising of annoyance that the fly may cause in you.
And if you wish to swat it, then watch your hand and be aware of your action.
Do not try to swat the fly... instead, let the hand swat the fly on its own.
Let us know how it goes.

Hi Nirmal! Yeah... OFF is nasty stuff anyway. I lived in Germany for a year when I was 16 (Congress-Bundestag foreign exchange), and I remember those windows. I thought they were marvelous, but yeah... no screens. And in the summer, we were covered with bug bites. The bugs aren't as many where there's a good breeze....
Hi Manigma! What's the difference between getting a comfortable seat and getting comfortable bug-wise? They seem like the same sort of process to me. |

Hi manigma,
Your words reveal wisdom to me. Thanks for the Buddha story. Right now there is a fly on my computer monitor!
I will give it a try as you say with complete awareness. And I have always thought I was a very aware person.
Thanks for the oshoworld link.

Hi manigma, I get it! I get it! Yes, the arm is not me,plus one needs to always be in the forever now of complete awareness.
Now they don't bother me as much, and sometimes I talk to them. But the bottom line is I don´t like them,(or mosquitos)and if I am pushed I will kill them!
Thanks for everybody's help! nirmal |

'Tiger Balm'(red, in lttle round pocket-sized metal containers sometimes- a proprietary TCM remedy) worked a treat when i was in India(long time ago,93).I hear the locals swear by it.It's known more as a muscle relaxant but it can be used like i do as a insect repellant; i would use this everytime over other alternative applications which i probably don't trust that much. You know what they say in the HYP-no bugs and all that, and give your sadhana space a good sweep .:)
I hear the Mosquitoes are now in Northern Europe, and probably have been for some time.
P.S You can get them on ebay in the convenient 3g tin format i mentioned.I tried the smoke ring thingie indoor in nepal- i don't think it really worked, not really that effective and probably a waste of time. When in doubt do as the locals do.Although in India i noticed alot of the locals seemed largely immune to the mosquito bites. They may have liked th white caucasian skin better. But some locals may have evolved soome kind of immune or biological response perhaps as i noticed they were left untouched whereas my wrists, ankles, face, neck etc all exposed places got it.They can give a nasty bite too , worse than midgies, especially if there is a dozen or so bites. They come up in a big lump ,red, swollen etc and itchy as if you feel the need to scratch them.I don't trust the old anti-malarial prophylactics they used to prescribe ( i'm not sure if they're precribed any more). They made me a bit ill and can really tax the liver especially if you forget to take them, the chloroquine etc, quinone or whatever it's called. I remember the CIA researched this as they wer elooking for something to give the troops as the evidence as to the efficacy of those drugs is still in dispute. But they sent agents into China as the Chinese troops used this TCM plant with amazing success so they wanted it for their own.. Eventually they discovered it actually grew outside the Whitehouse on their doorstep as a common-ish native also plant. This is what i rtead somewhere a number of years ago. Now perhaps they give their troops it or have done. It's like a TCM medicine and believe it actually works where as the western prophalactic stuff maybe doesn't. Pilot-studies have questioned how effective those A-M prophylactics are-like they made little difference. If i went to India again I (probably) would'nt bother with that stuff. I heard foreigners also that had lived there for some times over six months saying they did'nt bother and had heard similar stuff- like doing more harmt han good. Ideally for malaria if you get hold of this plant.I remember forgetiing to take the daily dose med for about a week and the weekly dose med alsoX4 or something silly(as they gave you two different types) ,so i kind of topped extra then, then i ate a pizza and a beer or two perhaps(or was that afterwards;i can't quite remember) and then barfed all over this picnic table at some inn somewhere around the nepalese border.I'm pretty sure it probably rots the liver though.I've actually got an old photoe of me sitting in that inn dressed in white and looking a bit dusty and with the red dot on the forehead i think but i'd need to put it on flickr or something in order to link to it. |

Nothing ever really dies, but it is wrong to kill and generates karma. We are in school, and killing is failing a test. Personally I believe it is more wrong to kill people than flies, and I only kill flies when they keep bothering me. And when people keep bothering me fortunately there are many other options. |

To me, this Universe is also like a fly. There are billions of Universes like ours.
The Life that flows in a Fly, in you and this Universe is same... is omnipresent. If you can consider Life as an ocean, then the Fly, you and the Universe are little forms in it.
Though differing in appearance, essentially same.
A fly is so small yet the Life in it gives it the power to flap its wings so fast that it makes a buzzing noise. So cool! And its an intelligent being too.
So beautiful... and alive.
Just like you.
