A long time ago I was a powerlifter. Lifting shares much in common with yoga. The basic practices are very simple and apparent. And beyond learning those simple methods, there's not much one can do to expedite progress. After a short time, there's not much new to learn or understand. All that's left is the doing. I'm getting to this point with AYP, at least with the practices I'm using so far. At this point, the only real "lever" I have left to pull is my training schedule.
So, I'm wondering about optimizing it. In powerlifting I experimented with many different ideas to optimize training. Including periodized training, which is the idea of training at a light work load for a few weeks or months that gradually increases to a max effort work load of peak performance, and then the cycle repeats. Another important concept was "active recovery." The idea that to speed recovery from the primary workouts, that the lifter would engage in several minor workouts to pump blood into the recovering area.
Can these concepts be translated to yoga? Has anybody experimented with periodized AYP practices? I.e. periodizing practice times, or practice sessions per day? For active recovery, I think it might translate as doing several mini-practice sessions per day in addition to the regular primary practices. Like 2 mins SBP, 3 mins meditation - to "pump some blood" into the recovering areas i.e. return briefly to stillness.
Here's wikipedia on periodization

Hi JDH,
Not sure if the same principle applies to yoga, but you can boost your practice by doing solo weekend retreats. This is basically where you treat the weekend as a spiritual retreat and increase the number of DM sessions per day.
Here are some resources on it:

I do a retreat every once in a while, and it can be a nice little practice enhancement. The nice thing about retreats is that even if you overload a little from them, you return to a normal routine when the weekend is over. So recovery time can be shorter than if you start overloading and don't catch it until a week or two in.
This is probably the closest to periodization I can think of (in AYP terms).
Good luck and enjoy

Thanks, I will try it out. Right now I'm not even fully steady in 2 per day. There's still 2-3 days per week when I only get one full set in, and then I'll do one that lasts like 10 minutes just to "honor the habit" even if its the last 10 minutes before I fall asleep. But I think I should be ok by now to do 3 in a day and see what happens from it. My life is kind of like a retreat anyway , it will fit right in. |
