Amma is on a picture in my kitchen window.....I am always reached by her smiling rays whether I busily go about my business there or not. And today...after having processed a difficult issue for days....an issue where I was completely blind to what I heard.....I found this quote in one of her books "From Ammas Heart". This quote...describes my stubbornness very well, so I thought I'd share it with you:
Questioner: Amma, how do You define "mind"?
Amma: It is an instrument that never hears what is told, but only what it wants to hear. You are told one thing, and the mind hears something else. Then, through a series of cutting, editing and pasting, it performs surgery on what it heard. In this process, the mind removes some things and adds certain other things to the original, interpreting and polishing it until at last it fits you. Then you convince yourself that this is what you were told.

I would say the mind hears everything it's told and the ego performs the surgery. The ego feels worthless and endeavours to compensate by creating worlds within worlds, and scenarios to boost itself. It seeks to be our consciousness, our true being but in fact it is nothing. Faced with that paradox, I am at times reduced to panic and terror. So the ego says, I am the only way. Let me go and you will be nothing. It is only in those periods of clarity and connectedness that one realises it has no power, and you are still here. |
