Hi David,

Some people will attract teachers who have lost the way, for particular karmic reasons, whilst others will attract teachers who are on a pure path of awakening, and therefor actually have something worth teaching, no?

Yes. The purpose of creating awareness of dangers is to protect the weak, not to protect the strong.

Absolutely. But what I was trying to say was that statements that start with: "most gurus...." would depend more on the particular experience of the individual, than on what "most gurus" actually do or say. These would be coloured not only by the teachers that we become aquainted with, but by the way in which we colour our experience of them with our own mental projections.

I've read that the meaning of "guru" is "dispeller of darkness".

But sometimes a cigar is just a cigar Christi, and sometimes when we see one, we aren't projecting our own phallic focus for complex freudian reasons, rather we correctly see The Guy smoking a cigar.

Of course if people believe that The Guy can't possibly be smoking a cigar, and some kid points out that he is, some aspersions will have to be cast on the kid's ability to discern.

From Sathya Sai Baba:

'Gu' means darkness and 'Ru' means light. Guru (spiritual preceptor) scatters darkness through light; he imparts wisdom which roots out our ignorance. 'Gu' also connotes 'Gunaatheetha' (One who is beyond 'gunas' or attributes) and 'Ru' connotes 'Roopavarjitha' (One who has transcended Form). Do not seek human Gurus, however great their reputation. They are bound by the qualities they have developed and they are still in need of the Form so that they may conceive of Reality. They themselves being limited, how can they communicate to you the Unlimited? Pray to the Parabrahma Principle (transcendental principle) or God within you to reveal Itself. Accept that as the Guru and you will be illumined.

A guru should be like the grim reaper or the angel of death.
