Hey...an odd topic from a fairly level headed guy, if I do say so myself. I generally really try to be rational and scientific in all that I do. I love being down to earth and sober. The emotional highs of life don't pull at my attention. Talk of siddhis and whatnot doesn't interest me so much...

But this is weird stuff!

I don't know if it's just coincidence, but a few weeks back when I was getting very deep into awakenings (energetic silences), twice, some strange things happened.

The first time, I was meditating in a chair, doing the awareness watching awareness method (which is my preferred meditation technique). I started having small awakenings, then a storm started. I had a really strong one, then the storm just became huge. It seemed like the deeper I was in my samadhi, the more intense the storm became. That was one of two storms that have happened this entire time I've been deployed to Iraq...so it was kind of strange that it happened at the same moment. But at the time, I thought it was probably just a coincidence, and to think otherwise would be bordering on delusional.

I still do tend to think that way about it.

The second strange experience...I was laying in my bed doing the same meditation, and had a really tough time getting into it. One of those days. I would kind of sleep, kind of being in a trance. Not breaking through. Then all of a sudden, a release. And the awakening happened instantaneously...and at that very moment, I heard tons of birds squawking outside of the window of my trailer. I stayed laying down for a while, probably five minutes...then I wondered "WTF!?" So I opened my shades, and there were literally like a thousand birds all circling above my trailer, all fighting with each other. I'm not exaggerating when I say a thousand.

This was too weird to comprehend.

Soon enough they dissipated, as my practice ended. I had no idea what that was about. There was no food or water near my trailer. I walked outside to check if everything was alright...if someone was laying on the ground, and maybe that's why the birds were circling above. But it wasn't typical behavior. They were anywhere from 1 foot above the trailers, to 100 feet up. I had never seen anything like it before, and frankly, it freaked me out.

Theoretically, I have no idea if my awakenings made these events occur...or maybe the events had helped precipitate my awakenings. But regardless - weird things happened when I went deep into yoga.

Anyone else ever experience this?

Hi Scott:

Try Googling "synchronicity." I'm sure we could come up with lots more examples of it here. Just another day in the life of yogis and yoginis ... purification and opening.

All the best!

Hi guys. My post is in reference to synchronicity. One of the stepping stones to my practice of Yoga was reading Carl Jung (Portable Reader with forward by Joeseph Campbell)and his study and creation of mandalas and his theory of synchronicity. I love this stuff!

Here is a cool link -

Scott, were they all the same type of bird?

Good timing Yogani (lol)!

Hi Scott,

Nice experiences! Yes, similar things, but perhaps not that grand happen to me every now and then. The outside is only a reflection of the inside, and nature is very generous in responding in fantastic ways of what's happening on the inside. I also remember Bernie Prior mentioned once, that we would (should?) be starting to notice such events more and more the deeper we went.

I also had a thunderstorm going once during 30 min of a larger release. The rain started pouring down the exact second my tears started to fall. The sun came back when I was done, and the food bell rang for dinner. Perfect timing!

Mac,

The birds were all different kinds, which are in the area I'm in. They usually don't mix together like they did.

Yogani and EMC,

It may be synchronicity...it's just that such theories tend to fall into the area of spirituality that I try to avoid: beliefs. I'll look more into it, though.

Hi Scott:

It is just part of the scenery along the way. It's not necessary to believe or disbelieve. Just continue on with practices.

All the best!

Yeah, I was talking to someone off forum about this and it always boils down to that:

It is cool to ponder and think about the scenery and to get a kick out of it but when it gets to the point of distraction it is probably time to surrender it. I think of the car driving and movie screen analogies that Yogani has made.

Hey Scott, this may not be appropriate on this forum but what is your MOS? Just ignore the question and it's all good.

I was an 11HE9 back during Desert Storm/Shield time period.

Peace
Mac

Thanks Yogani.

Hey Mac,

The different MOSs have changed, I think. I don't know what that one is. I'm a 68W, which is what's used today for a combat medic.

Great experiences, Scott, emc, it's something that me and Etherfish were talking about a while ago too.

Here's one for you that makes you go do do do do: LOL.

My new co-worker told me that he was really struggling financially and his old beat up truck was ready to die, had bald tires, et al, and he was going to have it towed and be done with the headache. So, I told him that he could get cash for the truck at a junkyard, which he was unaware of. Anyway, I arranged the whole thing and offered to drive him home, since he had no other ride and buses didn't run in that area.

Anyway, we continually had to postpone trashing the truck, because we were getting snow storm after snow storm and his tires were bald.

So I was in my roommates suv one day and she had one of those long ice scrapers (and I have one of those crapo dollar store ones, that you have to walk around your car a gazillion times to clean the glass). So, I said, "Wow, I'd like to have one of those... it sure would make my life a whole lot easier" And although she offered me hers, I was like, "Nah, mines fine and I just let go of it

Finally, the snow relented and I met my co-worker at the junk yard, and in the process of clearing out his personal belongings, from his truck, he tells me that he's going to give me gas money and I'm like, "absolutely not" yada yada, so he pulls out a brand new ice scraper and insists that I take it - one that is nearly identical to the one I wanted, but even nicer: LOL.

Good advice, btw, yogani, to be detached from the scenery:

Hi all you Synchronicistics!
What most often happens to me happens on a very small scale, but it never ceases to amaze how frequently it does actually happen. (I'd say at least once a week.) The world leaves me in peace to practise and complete my sadhana. And then, literally within two or three seconds of standing up, something occurs which would have otherwise completely interrupted me, had it happened any earlier. The phone rings, someone knocks on the door, baby screams, you name it.
What better siddhi could you ask for?

Scott, I enjoyed reading about the thousand birds circling above your trailer
during your Awareness Watching Awareness practice.
It reminded me of a Sufi book called "The Conference of the Birds" by FARID UD-DIN ATTAR.

There are many different kinds of birds meeting in that story.
Even though the spiritual teachings are given in the context of a story,
the teachings are easy to understand.

The book was composed in the twelfth century in north-eastern Iran.
Another interesting coincidence is that the book was composed in a part of the world
that is relatively close to where you are deployed.

The birds talk in the story and the book consists of their conversations.
Not including the introduction, the book has two hundred pages.
The book is about the many different obstacles one faces on the spiritual journey to awakening
and advice is given as to how to overcome those obstacles.
The Penguin Classics edition of the book, translated by AFKHAM DARBANDI and DICK DAVIS, is poetic.

It would have been better if the word self had been written with a small s (self)
instead of with a big S (Self) because in the book the word Self referes to the ego, not to the true Self.
Thus, when reading it, it is best just to pretend that the word Self is written self
and to remember that the word Self means ego in the book.

The book is available as a new book on Amazon.

There is another translation by C.S. Nott that was published by Shamabala in the early 1970's.
I have not yet read that translation, but it is supposed to be less poetic and more prose.
It is available from many of the online booksellers that sell used books.

You might enjoy reading "The Conference of the Birds," Scott.
Because of the experience you had, the book may have a special meaning for you.

Scott, I well know that feeling of "needing to break through". You can save yourself some time if you'll completely let that go, and meditate with the same non-chalance and low expectations with which you brush your teeth. If you wait for something to happen, the mind will make something happen. Waiting for something to happen is the way our minds behave in everyday life. Meditation is a brief respite from that. Just let go and let the cosmic barber trim your hair.

...and be safe over there, please.
