To relate it to my background, it's kind of like calling someone a priest, minister or reverend. Whereas, any one of those who are called that can be very devious and far from sainthood.
Actually, the term "Lama" is used which would translate as our words, "monk", "priest" "minister", "reverend", or "vicar". The term "Rimpoche" would translate more as "saint", as in Saint Francis of Assisi. There is a process for recognizing and officially declaring someone as a Rimpoche, just as there is in the process of canonization in the Catholic Church. But you don't have to be enlightened to be canonized... you just have to perform a miracle. So even the saints may not be enlightened.
Definitely a grey area!
