Is Celibacy necessary for Yoga?
No, celibacy is not required. What is of great value, however is preservation of sexual energy, specifically brahmacharya, the preservation and cultivation of the creative life force. This life force is recognized as sexual energy until we learn to use it in other ways.
Celibacy can be the first part of brahmacharya, but not all of it. The second and most important part of bramacharya is about encouraging sexual energy to move to a higher manifestation, once the prerequisite purification of the nervous system has been achieved. This concept of celibacy being just one part of brahmacharya is an important point. Without the second part of brahmacharya i.e. the cultivation of sexual energy to a higher manifestation, celibacy can lead to stagnation and to the emergence of unbalanced obsessive behaviors, particularly if it is an "enforced" celibacy.
