Good Evening All,

Today while driving I listened to national public radio. They had a
discussion about a study the University of Wisconsin did about the
effects of meditation on the brain. They collaborated the study with
the Dalai Lama and several Buddhist monks. The Dalai Lama has been
wanting Westerners to understand the value of meditation and wants
its benefits to be studied scientifically.

Those monks had to meditate with over 250 electrodes attached to
their heads.

The results published by the National Academy of Science were
surprising, that Princeton and Harvard are now testing the monks too.

They found that intense gamma waves were produced by the monks while
meditating. The monks had more gamma wave activity even while not
meditating than most people ever do. This indicates parts of their
brains working together that normally don't in most people.

It appears the actual physiology of their brains were changed by
meditation (over a long period, mind you).

The changes in their brains and neurological systems carried over
even to normal waking states, while not meditating.

I got to my office and found several articles about it using google.

Here is just one:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...005Jan2.html

It appears that meditation stimulates the left pre-frontal cortex,
the area of the brain associated with happiness, positive thoughts,
and emotion.

And we know it does a heck of a lot more....

Kathy

Namaste all:

Kathy thanks for the info, interesting read! Also if any are
interested, here is a link to the National Libraries of Medicines
(NLMs) archive of scientific studies on meditation that is free to
download. There are 29 studies on meditation that are free on
Pubmed central.

db=pmc&cmd=search&term=meditation )

Also 1079 studies that only abstracts of the articles are
available. Those are on regular pubmed.

The link didn't post the way I wanted it to. Let me try again (-:...

db=pmc&cmd=search&term=meditation )

Just in case it doesn't work again...go to:

and type in "meditation" in the keyword search toolbar, and then
click on "Pubmed Central" for the free articles, or "Pubmed" for the
abstracts of all articles.

Thank you Ali, for the link. Great site for research. Can you
imagine the difference in the world, if meditation caught on as
mainstream after science documents the benefits and the public
caught on? What a different world we would live in if a large
percent of people meditated regularly!

Peace,
Kathy
