An invading army was in the process of solidifying its occupation of a remote region of an ancient nation which had been devastated by a long and tumultuous war.
An arrogant battle-hardened squad of warriors stormed into the inner temple at a remote monastery, interrupting a group of monks engaged in silent meditation.
The squad leader, laughing rudely at his own interruption of the silence, came to a halt just a few feet in front of the nearest monk - a young man who was smiling at the soldiers, while simultaneously rising from his seat on the floor, and bowing in greeting to these brothers who had comes to visit.
The squad leader quickly brought his weapon up to shoulder height - and aimed it directly between the eyes of the young monk - and said in his most authoritative voice, tinged with a raw edge which made it very clear that he meant what he said:
"Do you understand that I have the power to take your head off?!"
Eyes twinkling, the monk replied:
"Do you understand that I have the power to let you?"
