One thing I love about AYP is that it's a full-scope yoga system. It covers both the inner methods of pratyahara, as well as the more outer methods of karma yoga.
On the note of karma yoga, I find one of the great karmic yogis to be the humorist Conan O'Brien. He is helping unite the world through comedy. Unity is the optimal condition of enlightenment, and when a celebrity uses his/her prowess as a tool to bring laughter to people's hearts, especially in underprivileged countries, it's a shining example of an outpouring of divine love.
Yogani wrote in his first lesson: "You will laugh and laugh when you see how it really is."
So, laughter is a prime symptom of purification and opening, and Conan has made so many people laugh, because he illuminates how reality truly is. It's a cosmic joke! And he has visited underprivileged countries and brought joy to minorities that have been demeaned by other less yogic personalities.
Yoga isn't just about meditation, or stretching, or how abstract you can be when talking about stillness and ecstasy. It's about the action you take on the material plane and how many lives you can touch with your efforts.
Can you make fun of yourself, and let others laugh at you?
If you can, that is surely a sign of humility, and moving beyond the limited identification of social demographics.
As Led Zeppelin sings:
"And a new day will dawn For those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter."
So, you want to be enlightened? Check in with your laughter meter and your willingness to engage in self-deprecating situations...then call me in the morning.
Happy trails!
