Hi Snake,
I stayed in an Ashram from the Gitananda Yoga tradition near Puducherry and we practised chanting several times per day. Ocasionally there were Sanskrit classes (this is to say that they know about pronunciation). There was never any mention of ON. I only heard OM while they chanted.

Open your mouth AAAAAUUUUU, or OOOOOOOO (depending which language you speak) MMMMMMM.....
Imagine the sound AAAAAAUUUUUUU or OOOOO coming from the depth of your heart is the Universe, coming upwards ......embracing in the mouth planet Earth when you close the lips MMMMMM........

By the way, in Sanskrit the union of "A" and "U", that is, "AU" is pronounced O (as in the word Tom). Therefore it is writen AUM, but actually it is pronounced OM (as in the word Tom), which is what is to be used in mantras and ajapa japa (silent japa). However some traditions also have Pranava Pranayama, which basically consist of saying aloud AAAAAAUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMM in an upward wave (Spanish pronunciation, that is A as in rat. For U, I donĀ“t know which English word uses the same pronunciation).
