Surya Bhedana is basically right nostril breathing to active the right solar nadi. Basically, you breathe in the right nostril and exhale the left and repeat.
I am reading a book on Pranayama by Gregory Maehle and he provides an interesting explanation on Surya Bhedana compiled from multiple Hindu texts:
“Simplified Surya Bhedana will make you less mental, less self-reflective and more physical, less easy-going and more in-your-face, less intuitive and more analytical, more outgoing and less introspective, more interested in breaking down existing structures (even if they are useful) than in nurturing them, and more interested in the one truth (often yours) than in others that also may have a point. Surya Bhedana is a powerful technique for those who have too much of the opposite, lunar tendencies. While it may have been possible to prescribe this pranayama technique unanimously to most/all yogis in India, say 1000 or 2000 years ago, one needs to ask whether many modern yogis have not already imbibed too much of this medicine. This technique should be practised only when prescribed and tailored by a knowledgeable teacher to the needs of an individual student.
Swami Niranjanananda says that Surya Bhedana should be used only by those who have a preponderence of the lunar nadi (Ida), as Surya Bhedana activates the sympathetic nervous system, creates heat and produces extroversion.
Only if you are lacking these qualities should you practise it. Do not self-medicate with Surya Bhedana. An experienced teacher has to determine whether this practice or Chandra Bhedana is appropriate for you, and the selection might even change according to season and place of practice. If in doubt, simply continue the practice of Nadi Shodhana.”
