I have heard this phrase, " I am not the body", many times from Yoga teachers and various religious figures. It always felt wrong when I heard it. The longer I practice Yoga, the more I feel like I am the body and the split apartness is the problem. Feel free to disagree with me.

Think about it..the body that you called "me", is just the food that has been processed...the food has been turned into flesh and bones..so who are you? The mind, your intelligence is just permutation and combination of things that you have collected over time! what you have collected can be yours not you! who are you?
Here is a beautiful story of a young man and a monk where they talk about the same thing! Who are you?

Hey atma, where did you hear all that from? I've "transcended" the body during meditation many times, but the truth is I still ain't saying "I am not this body".

I wouldn’t say that I am this body but I would say that this body is also me.

Om Shanti Here is my take, until I sit in Nirvikalpa Samadhi meditation without seed I always aware that I have a body which I carried away whichever drama that I perform within and in this body.

As an audio engineer I carried away those tasks within this body, As a meditator, I carried away the drama the role I'm playing as a spiritual being. If I have had a partner to live with, I would have carried the task of being a family member within this body.

After the experience of Nirvikalpa Samhadi and having to shrink the whole universe within a glance, I absolutely confirmed that this body is for planet earth as my soul is for beyond.

It is ok to accept that you are this body. Nothing wrong with it. It is just that means that you experience sorrow through this body.

I will just say this, It is an honor to be within this body and yet experiences the power of meditation.

When you realize that you are not this body, sorrow will never touch you since all sadness come from body consciousness. Om Shanti

Even though I have written what I have written while I'm in meditation I don't do mantra I sit still and not this, not this. Even the experience whatever samadhi is not this, not this as I said to the body.
