Hello,
I found this web site while googling and was wondering if anyone here could help me with a digestive problem I've had for some time. I would like to begin this message by saying I'm not a very spiritual person, I don't try to be at least. And I have never actively attempted to have a Kundalini awakening nor do I know for sure that's what I'm experiencing. Or if such an awaking is the reasons for my symptoms. I don't and never have practiced Yoga of any form. Though I have a deep respect for spiritualist and pride myself in keeping an open mind. To be honest this message is a bit of a shot in the dark. I've been uncomfortable for a long time and I feel like I should exhaust any and all avenues to relieve that discomfort. And a lot of my symptoms seem similar to what I've read online about a Kundalini awakening. Which is why I'm on your website.
I'll begin with my physical symptoms. My discomfort started 10 years ago (I was 15), after my Grandfather died of colon cancer. I had always been a very healthy child, but I begin to have excessive amounts of gas, and bloating, as well as a sensation of a constant pressure pushing on my anus. Combined with a feeling that my anus was opening and closing some times. On rare occasions very small amounts of fecal matter would come out. It was always a more pronounced feeling during times of stress or anxiety. During this period in my life I also lost close to 30 pounds. My parents brought me to a pediatric GI specialist, at first he thought I had a bacterial infection and I was put on antibiotics, however they didn't cure my symptoms. In fact if anything it made them worse. The next 6 years of my life I continued to see this doctor. I had an upper and lower endoscopy, allergy tests, took probiotics and other medicines, all to no avail. He diagnosed me with IBS when I was 16-17. He also diagnosed me with reflux, though I'm convinced I've always had that. It doesn't bother me at all, I only notice the reflux after I drink soda, because I have to belch. He had me take medicine for the reflux also but i didn't take it for longer than a year, It just didn't and still doesn't bother me. Also another possibly unrelated symptom that came about at this same time was that my hands were always wet, and often freezing cold. Something that to this day still persists.
Well life goes on as they say and though High School was a bit hellish, I made it through it, went to college and learned to live with my digestive problems. By 21 I had stopped going to the doctors and stopped taking medications, they didn't help and I was happier just learning to live with it. Sometimes I even think these digestive problems have helped me in certain ways.
The gas and bloating is rarely painful, it's just uncomfortable and I've learned how to block the discomfort to an extent. I'm always gassy, bloated and have theses urges to go to the bathroom, it's so familiar it's easy to block out in most situations. The only thing that bothers me is the smell that it produces, which makes my social life awkward. A petty concern really, I've never been much of a social butterfly anyway. But I've now graduated from school and I would like to get an office job and this problem makes being in an enclosed office environment hard, which is why I'm once again revisiting how to get rid of these symptoms.
Now that I've shared my physical symptoms and how I've tried to eliminate them in the past I'll move into the more curious "symptoms", or maybe more accurately experiences that have occurred during this same period which make my suspect it could be an awakening. I don't know for sure whether they are connected to my IBS. But they began also about 10 years ago as a sensation upon my back. It feels like the shivers you get when you have a fever. An electric feeling which moves along the spine. At first it often came to me while listening to music in bed before I fell asleep. It's a very pleasant sensation. It has almost always made me smile and at times its brought me to tears of joy, though i don't know why. I never really investigated it in till recently. I felt like it just happened randomly and I was never unhappy that it did happen. Two years ago though It began happening more regularly. It was at the same time that a friend of mine had killed himself. I began feeling the sensation often while reading, watching TV, and sometimes for no reason at all. I enjoyed the sensation so I started experimenting how to bring it on. I started to realize that it was often triggered after I read something which I perceived to be profound or important. Or when I practice deep breathing while relaxing. I was never a big philosophy reader before this period but I quickly found that these books could trigger the sensation easiest. I also began to realize that the sensation wasn't always the same. Most of the time it only hovered around my lower back or mid back, only rarely did it make it as far as the bottom of my neck. As I started to feel these sensations more and more (I now feel them many times each day, though they vary in intensity) I also noticed that my dreams had become more and more vivid. Also I sometimes felt a pressure building in my head. The pressure was never painful or anything. In fact I kind of liked it for some reason, if I relax into it, it feels kind of nice (for lack of a better description). During this period I also began to wake up briefly for just a few moments every morning at about 4am. A few months ago I began to see this strange shadowy spider when I would wake up around 4am. It appeared to be about a foot long and maybe 6ins wide. It would often be walking on my ceiling or hanging from a thread by my face as I awoke. It was a bit freaky and shocking at first. But nothing that overly concerns me. I've always had an active imagination, and the way I see it this spider is either a product of that imagination (most likely) or it exist independently of me. Either way It doesn't bother me. I only mention it because of how frequent i see it and because it started about the same time as when the sensation on my back became more and more common.
Well I would just like to say thank you if you've read this far. I know this has been a long winded essay. I just wanted to make sure i got everything which might be prevalent. In truth as petty and egotistical as it might sound my only real motivation in talking about any of this is to eliminate the bad smell which seems to follow me everywhere. The gas and bloating can be annoying but I'm still generally happy with my life. I refuse to let them make life unhappy, I will continue to be happy even if I can't eliminate these symptoms and the smell. But I still would like to get rid of the smell, and it's defiantly connected to the gas and feeling of pressure against my anus. Whether all the rest slightly insane stuff I've mentioned also plays a part in my IBS I can't say for sure. It just seemed strange that it all happened at once. Is this a spiritual crisis like some of the ones I've read online? I tend to think not, since I most certainly don't feel like I'm in the midst of a crisis, especially one which has been ongoing for 10 years. But I've notice some similarities between my experiences and Kundalini syndrome, which I found online. Which has lead me to your web site and to writing this essay. If you have any advice on how I can eliminate my IBS I would be very thankful. Even if you don't, thank you for reading this overly long and poorly written ramble. If nothing else I feel better having written it all down and posted it.

Hi Danday,

Welcome! Have you ever looked into Ayurveda for the IBS? I would look up Vata imbalance or Ayurveda IBS.

Hi,

I have had some digestive problems throughout my life also. Spastic colon mostly. The bloating was awful. And I would get nauseated a lot in the middle of the night. I did one thing at the suggestion of my reiki master. I stopped eating black pepper. I got immediate results.

Apparently, black pepper is very hard to digest, especially when it is not cooked into the food. Give it a try. You will know right away if it bothers you.

I have also had the pressure in the anus thing going on, although it has let up a lot as kundalini has progressed. I don't get it as often and it is not as painful.

Lalow- I've ordered some Vata digestive tablets. And I'm going to try some of their recommendations. So i'll see if that has any effects.A lot of the symptoms for a vata imbalance do a-line with mine. Then again the list of symptoms for it are very long and broad.But no harm in trying. Thanks for the idea.
Margaret- I'm not sure how much black pepper I really eat right now but I'll start tracking that and cutting it out of any cooking I do. Thanks for the kind message. I'm happy to hear your own digestive problems have let up.

Sending you healing energy and thoughts your way.
Few pointers I can suggest include:
1. After each meal, massage the general mid point area between your navel and your right hip first massaging clockwise for 5 to 10 seconds followed by anticlockwise for a similar duration. Total duration is around a minute. By the way, women should start first with anticlockwise followed by clockwise. This stimulates better digestion.
2. Thrice in a day, any time according to your convenience, block your right nostril and breathe through your left nostril for about a minute.

The electric feeling which moves along the spine is indeed kundalini.

Your IBS can be due to very strong emotions your granddad’s death caused in you. If we bottle up intense feelings (could have been grief, could have been fear that the same thing could happen to you) the emotional tension will often find a somatic outlet - that is it begins to interfere with some bodily function. IBS is one of the conditions that falls in the psychosomatic category.

I will join Jusmail in his advice to give meditation a go. It will put you in a better position to acknowledge and deal with whatever feelings you may have repressed. You don't have to be 'spiritual' to meditate. Many people do it these days just to keep healthy and balanced.

You can find instructions for how to meditate on this website. AYP includes two types of meditation: mantra meditation - Lesson 13 and breath focused meditation, which you can find in Lesson 367 (scroll down the page there - it is the final section of that lesson).

If you don't have the time /energy to put an hour a day into meditation, just a ten minutes session every a day followed by rest will give you an idea of what meditation can do for you. In fact, since your kundalini has awaken by itself, you might find that you are among the sensitive meditators, in which case 10 minutes sessions may suffice.

Jusmail- Thank you for the message and the healing thoughts. I tried the massaging yesterday, I think it might have helped a bit. I felt better than usual yesterday after lunch, (which was when I did the massaging). But by about 8pm I was my usual gassy and bloated self. I was at work in till 10pm so I didn't eat between 1pm and 10pm, so I never did the massaging again. Should I have? Even though I didn't eat anything after 1pm? Also about how much pressure would you recommend that I apply?

Blueraincoat- I'm very interested in learning more about meditation and I will certainly look at those lessens.My schedule is very hectic of late with my new job. But I very much would like to find a way to fit some meditation in.I'll let you know if it helps.
As for my IBS being caused by intense bottled up feelings, i think its possible. My IBS definitely gets worse based on mood. However It exists in some form at all times. I was out of school and was working part time for about 6 months recently. It was probably the most relaxing 6 months of my life. During that time my IBS was better but It was still a persistent discomfort.
If I'm suffering from intense bottled up feelings, I just don't know how to find out what those feelings may be. I was close to my grandfather and was sad to have lost him. I could definitely see that moment being a defining one in my life. But he lived a long and happy life. I dont see anything I could be repressing there. I like to pride myself as being someone who looks every thing in the eye, no matter how painful.Because pain is not to be avoided. Pain is always the product of wrong or ignorant thought. I'm a firm believer in that. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm willing to confront any bottled up emotions, or any other thing which could be effecting me, both consciously and subconsciously. I'm just ignorant of what I could be repressing and how to find it. Any recommendations on how I could find such a block? If one does in fact exist.

Hello Dan,
Just gentle pressure, nothing excessive. Also please make eating a routine. Untimely meals can play havoc with IBS. If meals are not possible, even a few biscuits, chocolate bites, or some fruits would come in handy. Do take up meditation. Even 5 minutes twice a day (morning/evening) should be a good start.

With a consistent meditation routine you eventually fine tune directed attention; as Yogani has told, from the silence comes Witness and Guru. They can aid you in discovering anything repressed. All the answers are inside, awaiting discovery!

You would be amazed how many blind spots we have, even those of us who think we are very introspective and in touch with our feelings. The subconscious mind is a wondrous thing and a master at brushing things under the carpet. Meditation will clear the blind spots given time. It takes patience and regular practice.

Read the lessons on meditation (there are some Q&As after Lesson 13 worth looking through as well), then start meditating. Start slowly - if I were you (with a kundalini already active) I'd start with 10 minutes twice a day, longer if you choose the breath focused type. Then you'll get an idea of your sensitivity level and how much meditation you actually need. Any questions about meditation or self pacing you can ask on these forums.

There is the route of psychotherapy you could pursue as well for emotional blocks, if indeed a block does exist, but it is not guaranteed to work. Success not only depends on how clever and experienced your psychotherapist is, but on how good your relationship is. Just in case you wish to look into this option, the type of psychotherapy that works on this sort of issue is called psychodynamic or psychoanalytic. They do tend to go on for a while and it could be costly. If I were in your shoes I'd put my time into meditation. You will have many benefits from it.

Totally agree with Blue. I have stomach issues as well. They are all because of underlining repressive issues which are very very deep. Doing the DM through breath is the best way to elliminate it. Breath attention is very powerful tool when Kundilini is active. I will go with this route. Also do lot of walking as it will strength the system. Daily Abhianaga massage is very helpful as well as it will relax the body before shower everyday.
