At a recent retreat with Francis Lucille, he was asked about bhastrika pranayama. The reply was very interesting. Lucille suggested to perform bhastrika not forcefully and rather like the movement of a butterfly.
I practice bhastrika quite powerfully since a while, as suggested here, and I think it is a wonderful kundalini stimulator. And yet, after sitting practice, and just before yoga nidra/cosmic samyama, and rest, "targeted bhastrica" is also being done here. Over the years this practice has become subtler and subtler to become almost figurative. Like an ecstatic energy movement up and down, up and down: the beautiful moves of a butterfly.
My feeling is that the grosser, forceful bhastrica has it's importance - especially in the early phase of the sushumna purification; but the subtler "butterfly bhastrica" becomes more relevant at a later stage.

This post is timely for me. As of late, with the "inner winds" blowing throughout the day, in quiet times I play with the prana with what you are calling "butterfly wings", a soft, almost inaudible bhastrika. This has the effect of rousing the bliss gently and is quite pleasant. I rarely do the "forceful" version as my practice is progressing at a comfortable rate and I am ever vigilant re possible overload. |
