I've found out that my concept of stage 2 is not aligned with Yogani's lessons, so I actually answered Jim's message incorrectly.
Of course, it does not really matter where we label the stages, but it's good to keep ourselves on the same page at AYP. I apologize if anyone was further confused by my mistakes here.
Some of the confusion is easy to because we are in a 'fence and post' situation, where the labelling can be either on the fences or the posts. Yogani labels the fences. The 'posts' transitions) are defined by what the tongue can reach or acheive.
Stage 1 this stage begins when tongue reaches point at which hard and soft palate meets.
Stage 2.
This stage begins when the tongue is on the nasal pharynx.
The nasal pharynx is above the soft palate and the tissue may feel slightly different to the tongue. It's hard to describe this difference.
The soft palate covers the lower part of the nasal pharynx. The uvula is essentially a flap of soft palate which further covers the nasal pharynx by going 'up' when you swallow and protecting it from your food. In the same way as protecting your nasal pharynx from your food, your uvula will protect it from your tongue; it will tend to go 'up' naturally and cover more of your nasal pharynx and give your tongue further to go to get to touch it, so that your tongue would have to gain a few centimeters of extension before the nasal pharynx is reached.
This stuff about the 'side entrance' etc: Yogani is teaching a technique for getting the tongue 'under' the base of the uvula so that it can rest solidly on the nasal pharynx in the middle, even though the base of the uvula would normally cover the nasal pharynx when the tongue is only this long.
Stage 2 continues while the tongue gets longer, all the way until the tongue reaches the septum.
What this 'side entrance' technique is delivering is an early payoff. It's not actually shortening the time to get to the septum, which begins stage 3. As the tongue gets longer, there comes no need to get under it; it will eventually be able to pass the uvula entirely and go further to reach the septum.
That's the proper answer to Jim's question. Please disregard my former answer --- it is right in some ways but not about where stage 2 is in Yogani's system. Also 'soft palate' should read 'nasal pharynx' in that post.
Best regards,
-David

------- Wow, ok, thanks for the clarification. There's something slightly jarring abou thaving this utterly no-way-around-it physical benchmark amid all the philosophical/spiritual/ relativistic practices we're working on!
I saw, to my surprise, that Mantak Chia even alludes to kechari mudra, noting there's much greater conductivity when you take the tongue further back in the mouth (though he doesn't go anywhere near this far...at least not in the beginner materials I've seen).
