What a movie. Just watched this after downloading it from a torrent. It's the story of a young German film student who is a huge fan of David Lynch and so begins seeking David out and investigating his role in the Transcendental Meditation movement/hierarchy/business.

First thing to note is...the AYP method of Deep Meditation is essentially identical to the Transcendental Meditation technique. The main difference is that Yogani provides the mantra for free, and it's universal to everyone--there's no customization, or guru transmission, or esoteric-don't-tell-anybody-about-it protocol. Yogani just lays it on the table and says: use it, and find out for yourself. The sound will resonate with the same inner acoustics for everyone (though the matrix of obstructions through which that sound resonates will certainly be unique). In TM, you get a special mantra based on age criteria, and it's administered by an authorized teacher, and there's a nice chunk of money you have to pay.

Also, though it wasn't covered in the movie, I'm pretty sure that TM has an equivalent of samyama, which is the TM Siddhi program, which uses its own list of sutras.

Anyway, this movie is quite touching, because the filmmaker throws his whole heart into the investigation and even begins meditating himself. He affirms the benefits of TM and finds a new sense of peace and well-being. But, the more he pries into the organization, the more he finds the dirt and grime behind the scenes. For instance, Maharishi advocated celibacy and claimed to be celibate himself, yet the filmmaker manages to track down a woman who had been close to Mararishi and reported having sexual relations with him. Also, when Maharishi died, there was an inner power struggle amongst his family and devotees regarding finances and control over the empire. Another devotee that the filmmaker interviewed claimed that Maharishi "pulverized" him and essentially chased him away once the man was no longer giving Maharishi money or his full devotion.

Long story short, this is such a penetrating and clear view of the pitfalls of the guru worship mentality, as well as the shallowness of an esoteric, exclusive dissemination of spiritual knowledge/techniques. I'm not bashing TM or Maharishi--obviously, there's plenty of people who have benefitted from the program, but it's helpful to watch a movie like this and see the pitfalls.

I'm glad I stumbled on AYP/Yogani, who bypasses all the glitter and glam and just cuts right to the chase. A true American pioneer. If it's free, give it away. Freedom should not have a price tag, nor a complex hierarchy to navigate through. It just is. The adventure lies in how we get there.

Godspeed everyone.
