When lying in bed before sleep, my hands go into figa mudra. I don't know if its automatically, but it feels much more comfortable to put the fingers this way than any other way. Is there some meaning behind it? |

That is a form of automatic yoga, it is common when doing yoga, it is a way for the universe to show you that yoga is already in you. dont worry about it there will be more eventually, its harmless. As Yogani says, The guru is in you. |

Yes there is much enjoyment to be had in automatic yoga! If you must you can resist it (in public) but better to observe it and appreciate that it shows up in the first place. |

Hi Mats and All,
Yes, it is automatic yoga. Sometimes it is a movement happening because it feels good. Other times it is just something happening for no apparent reason, coming from changes occuring in the subtle neurobiology. Such occurrences are natural for spiritual practitioners, and we can let them happen without undue engagement.
Below is an overview of automatic yoga compiled from the AYP Plus lessons and all the books by an AI assistant we have been experimenting with. It is hoped that this useful feature can be added to AYP Plus sometime in the next year. It really helps for researching the vast AYP writings, spanning more than 20 years.
All the best!
The guru is in you. -----------------------
Automatic Yoga in AYP Automatic yoga refers to physical, mental, and emotional tendencies that seem to arise spontaneously, during yoga practices or after, as the nervous system undergoes purification and opening. It is an effect of yoga practices, not a cause of spiritual progress. Here are some key points regarding automatic yoga from the sources: * Connection to the nervous system: The sources emphasize that automatic yoga is a natural capability of the human nervous system, not something determined or invented by yoga systems. As practices stimulate the spiritual neurobiology, automatic yoga emerges as a response, reflecting the interconnectedness of various aspects of yoga within the body. * Manifestations: Automatic yoga can manifest in various ways, including: - Mental and emotional: Increased desire for spiritual studies, more agreeable and kind conduct. - Physical: ... Breathing changes: Automatic breath suspensions (kumbhaka), sudden exhalations, rapid breathing (bastrika/bhastrika). ... Head movements: Head going forward, back, or rotating (forms of jalandhara). ... Torso movements: Leaning forward, lurching off the seat (yoga mudra). ... Other: Hand mudras, gentle anal compressions (asvini mudra), eyes rolling upwards (sambhavi mudra), tongue moving to the roof of the mouth (kechari mudra), vibrations in the body, rapid movements of limbs, vocalizations. - Subtle changes: Increased inner silence, energy, and happiness in daily life. * Variability: Automatic yoga experiences vary among practitioners. Some may experience intense physical movements, while others may have subtle or no noticeable manifestations. This variation depends on individual differences in the structure of inner obstructions within the nervous system. * Handling automatic yoga: The sources advise against favoring automatic yoga over structured practices. Instead, practitioners should: - Favor the chosen practice: Gently return to the procedure of the practice being done when automatic yoga arises. - Self-pace: If automatic yoga becomes overwhelming, reduce practice time or intensity to allow the energy to settle. - Observe without judgment: Allow the experience to unfold without getting attached or resisting it. * Reasons for not solely relying on automatic yoga: - Lack of structure: Automatic yoga, while powerful, lacks the systematic approach necessary for effective integration of its effects and maintaining a consistent practice routine. - Risk of overdoing: Automatic yoga can lead to excesses that are difficult to assimilate, causing discomfort and hindering progress. - Symptom, not cause: Automatic yoga is a sign of purification and opening, not a primary driver of spiritual transformation. Overall, automatic yoga is a natural phenomenon that can arise during or after spiritual practice. While it can provide a powerful experience, the sources recommend favoring structured practices, self-pacing, and observing the experience without judgment. This balanced approach helps practitioners to navigate the process of purification and opening in a safe and sustainable manner.
