Namaste, A question please Can a jnani know which of the 3 types of karma is the cause of a disease in the sthula sharira? sañcita karma, agami karma originated disease can be destroyed, is that correct?

Hi Jeff,
There is a saying: "unfathomable are the ways of karma". Basically the workings of karma are too complex to be understood by the mind.
Put simply, the predisposition we have in any given moment, to react to any event in a certain way, is determined by everything we have done in the past. This includes every action we made, every word we have spoken, every thought we have had, and everything that has happened to us. All these events are stored in the body and the mind, and then when something happens, we will respond accordingly. This is our karma, or action/ reaction.
When we cultivate inner silence, through meditation, we begin to create some distance between what is happening in our consciousness and the one who is conscious. In other words we create a gap between pure awareness and the contents of the mind and objects of the senses. When this happens, we then have a choice in every moment, over whether to react to things or not. In other words, we begin to become free from karma, free from having to react according to the results of our past actions.
The different kinds of karma are:
1. Those actions that have happened in the past and which are going to affect us in the future. 2. Those actions which have happened in the past and are affecting us right now. 3. Those actions which we are doing now, which will affect us now, and in the future.
So, karma is a bit like rolling a ball down a hill. It gathers speed and momentum and will then affect things it bumps into down the hill.
Karma can't be destroyed, but it can be transcended. In other words, we can simply step out of the game, if we choose to, through regular spiritual practices. The deeper our inner silence is, the less karmic effects will have a hold over us, and the more freedom we will experience in any moment. This is the process of moksha (liberation), which is one of the fruits of yoga.
As for disease, the body is mortal and temporary, and will develop diseases from time-to-time. We can take good care of the body, but this will not prevent disease and death coming in the end. But we do not need to suffer because of disease and death. The transcendence of karma, is also the transcendence of suffering, because suffering is caused by identification with, and reactions towards, the contents of the mind.

“Unfathomable are the ways of karma,” says The Bhagavad Gita. There are layers and layers of karma that interact and create complex patters. We might think about individual karma starting from our actions, and then there is a family karma, a social karma, a planetary karma, and probably beyond that.
And then not all the karma shows up in one lifetime, as Christi mentions. Spiritual practice does not erase karma of this life, but it can mitigate it. Patanjali writes “Avert the danger that has yet not come.”
At the same time, many have noticed that often before the consciousness wakes up to itself at an individual location, a lot of karma unravels. As we wake up or better said as the consciousness wakes up in us, there is less and less attachment that ties us to suffering. Drama and suffering ease up their grip, but pain can still be experienced as we are still humans. It can be quite a surprise to see how different pain is when there is no suffering. It is more like a shadow than a torment of suffering.
Will spiritual practice cure an illness? Anything is possible. An illness may be cured or alleviated. Or an illness may be part of our karma for this lifetime, and then we have to learn to deal with it.
It is good to let things go as they may and let go of resistance. Often I think that this life is a big lesson, and the things that stir resistance are the ones I should pay attention and learn from them.
The seeds of future lives and future karma are said to be burn in samadhi.
Your spiritual practice impacts not only you, but also the ones close to you – and in time more and more sentient beings. There is no separation in the creation: we are woven together, and so it is our karma.
