I have just recently added Chin Pump to my practices with almost instant deepening of meditation. I would like to hear other peoples experiences and or problems with this practice.
Richard, I too have found chin pump to be a wonderful part of AYP. It helps to send some of the ecstatic energy to the head prior to meditation. Sometimes during meditation, chin pump may come on automatically for a little while. This to me is an indication of it's necessity in these practices.
I have also noticed a tendency to hold the breath in for longer times as I go, giving more chin pumps on a single breath. This isn't a concious decision really, it's just going with what feels right.
The chin pump is a fantastic practice! I was reluctant to try it because I had been taught that full head rotations were injurious. I suppose that doing them mechanically would be but coordinating with teh breath really opens up energy flow in a way that regular jalandhara doesn't and actually restricts after years of practice. When i do chin pump I take my time and don't rush, going only as fast as the breath guides me. This can sometimes even include pausing at a particularly delicious or stuck spot and continuing the breath cycle untill that spot releases and the head is naturally inclined to move on. These pauses seem to really help release at a deeper level and allowing the pace to be a nice easy one really helps to avoid a mechanical practice of chin pump which should be carefully avoided.
It is probably the kumbhaka (breath retention) and/or slow spinal breathing. See lesson 49 on perspiration in pranayama at http://www.aypsite.org/49.html

Thanks yes I did have it when I first started spinal breathing but it stopped after a short time and I thought this might be something different.
