It is recommended you read from the beginning of this tantra yoga archive,
as previous lessons are prerequisite to this one. The first lesson is, "What
is tantra yoga?"
Q:
Does amaroli (urine therapy
- see
Lesson 319) reduce fertility
while it is in use? My wife and I have both been using amaroli with good
health benefits. At the same time, we have been trying to conceive for over
a year, with no pregnancy so far, and we were wondering if amaroli might be
delaying conception. And once she does become pregnant, would it be
beneficial for her and the baby if she kept up amaroli?
A: Regarding amaroli and fertility, there are
opinions on both sides of the question. Due to some recycling of hormones in
the body, amaroli may have a tendency to reduce ovulation. There is some
mention in yoga lore about it. Is it true? I'm not aware of any scientific
research on it. On the other side, there are also opinions out there that
amaroli aids fertility and makes birth control pills less effective. What to
believe? It needs some science.
Just to be sure, for
those who are having difficulty conceiving while amaroli is in use, it may
be wise for the woman to discontinue the practice until there is conception,
while recognizing that this is only one of many possible factors involved.
In any case, if the time to conception is becoming too long, it may be a
good idea to visit the fertility doctor to see what is going on.
There are also mixed opinions on whether a woman
should be doing amaroli during pregnancy. It has been pretty common in the
East for centuries. Is would seem unlikely to be harmful to the fetus, since
amniotic fluid is mostly fetal urine. We were all formed in our own urine.
Nevertheless, it is always best to err on the side of safety when a new
being is in the making. So if amaroli is going to be in use during
pregnancy, very light would be the suggestion.
And self-pace as necessary. It is
your choice.
On a related matter, advanced yogis and yoginis
will have increasing "natural vajroli" occurring within, which is the
automatic ongoing absorption of sexual essences and urine upward through the
urinary tract and bladder into the higher neurobiology
(see
Lesson T60). It is something
that happens as part of the rise of ecstatic conductivity (kundalini), and
the supporting "nectar
cycle" (see
Lesson 304).
This may or may not have a significant bearing on fertility, with the same
possibilities for lesser or greater fertility mentioned above.
A full range of daily yoga practices
can have noticeable effects on a womans menstrual cycle,
including the reduction of cramps, bleeding, and even the cessation of the
cycle altogether at times, without pregnancy or breast feeding. What the
detailed effects of this may be on fertility are not fully known. More work
for science to do. In the meantime, the benefits can be enjoyed.
For both women and men, there should be no undue
concern about yoga causing us to lose our ability to have children. We have
always talked about yoga and tantra cultivating an expansion of sexual
function to also encompass human spiritual transformation. This does not
limit our ability to have children, if it is our desire to do so. Indeed,
many advanced practitioners are having children these days, which is a
blessing for all of us. When the spiritual machinery is activated, the
reproductive machinery does not become obsolete. Life continues in all of
its aspects, with the main difference being an unending presence of joy and
outpouring divine love.
The
guru is in you.
