With reference to Robert Adams talking about the Self which exists and the personal self that we appear to be and that creates the world, what is the point of the Self identifying with the illusion that is the personal self and experiencing this illusion and going through hell? Why identify with a mirage at all?

The Self needs a body in order to interact in the world with the objects and matter it creates. Some say it's for our own good, who knows?
Ultimately the aim is to fully integrate into our material bodies and accept regular life, whatever that means, elevating our karmic debts into loving service, and continuing to develop our control and awareness from life to life, taking the pleasure and the pain as it comes, as indicators of our progress, not rewards or punishments.

We don't like being alone and we don't have anything better to do.

At hannah 12: that is why it is called in sanskrit the Lila, or the game/dance.
